Saabs had freewheeling a LONG time ago.  Sort of the same thing.

The system was mechanical, could be engaged or disengaged as desired, and didn't require a "controller."

Here's a link to the Saab version.  In this case it was used to help lubrcate the 2-stroke engine while coasting.
